Qees have a Hong Kong makeover

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

Toy2r have collaborated with Hong Kong’s finest artists to create the Qee Hong Kong Series 1. This move has turned out to be a masterstroke, as they’ve been blessed with some of the most original designs yet seen from the ever-expanding Qee franchise. And when we had a glimpse of this series, we knew we just had to bring it to you at urbanretro.co.uk. There’s a real depth of variety too. From cartoony creations like Danny Chan’s smoking cat and Tim Tsui’s kookily bright Da Tyrnannosaur, to sleek metallic figures like Secret Mickey and Secret Zero Black, both by Brothersfree. Also, look out for our two ultra-rare Secret Raymond Choy designs. These two toys caricature the artist, one dressing him in head-to-toe Adidas and the other with the Toy2r logo. The Qee range has become a cultural phenomenon, and the fact that you can link them to your key-chain just makes them even more appealing. Check out the highly-collectible Qee Hong Kong Series 1 at urbanretro.co.uk.

Terratag are tearing up the scene

Saturday, September 27th, 2008

Terratag are back again, with some more explosive prints to set your mind in a whirl. We’re big lovers of Terratag, and their mad-mash up of Eastern and Western influences. At the heart of it all is a unique concept of combining traditional Japanese manga characters with nu-rave neon colours. And this vision is made ever deeper with the new designs now available at urbanretro.co.uk. T-shirts like the Abunai RMX-Y sum it up nicely, as it features a monochrome mech robot against the backdrop of bright and bold typography. There’s also the buzzing brilliance of the Wow! Stars print, which has the Terratag logo surrounded by luminous stars. And Terratag’s consistent theme of East and West is highlighted perfectly in the Inspired T-shirt. It takes the Terratag logo and twists it with half-Japanese, half-American images. It’s a wildly inventive collection that’s not to be missed. See all the designs at urbanretro.co.uk.

Mad Mini Moofia figures

Friday, September 26th, 2008

Under the guise of his Tokidoki brand, Simone Legno has been creating some of the most quirky, colourful designs seen in years. And this looks set to continue with his latest venture, the Tokidoki Mini Moofia series. These wholly original toys criss-cross the concept of cows and milk in the form of cute little cartons. We love it when a designer lets his imagination loose, so we just had to bring you the range at urbanretro.co.uk. Some of the figures kinda remind us of that fantastic video by Blur for their song Coffee and TV, which had a humanised milk carton running around the streets. However the exception here is that they’re modelled more on cows, so each of them comes complete with a set of chunky horns! There’s an international vibe about the collection too, with the Eastern Milk design featuring oriental typography, as well as the Spanish style Leche and the Italian-inspired Latte. Feeling thirsty for more? Visit urbanretro.co.uk to see our whole range of Tokidoki Mini Moofia figures.

Dephect to these new styles

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

Dephect was born out of the urban art scene, when two talented graffiti artists got together to see what magic they could create with clothing. That was over nine years ago now, and they haven’t looked back since. The label has gone from strength to strength, creating radically different designs for everything from belts to t-shirts. And the new collection now available at urbanretro.co.uk follows in this great tradition. Crisp stencil shadow prints of quirky robots seem to crop up quite a lot in these Dephect designs. The Mixomatic T-shirt is a cool example, featuring a retro mechanical character with a turntable on his chest! There’s also the Utopia print, which has an old-skool wind-up robot and stylised Japanese typography. On a separate note, we also like the clean, contemporary of the City Rockers tee which pays homage to inner-city taggers. All in all, Dephect have done the business yet again with this quality range that’s ready and waiting for you to see at urbanretro.co.uk.

Strong designs by Mighty Muggs

The collection incorporates all the main heroes of the Marvel comics, as well as three figures from the classic Indiana Jones movies. And guess what? They’re all available right now at urbanretro.co.uk! Each toy has a cartoony design, with bright colours and a chunky shape. They all have large, expressive heads too, which fits well with the name Mighty Muggs! In the Marvel range, you’ve got fan’s favourites like Spiderman, Wolverine and The Incredible Hulk. And of course, good old Indy had to make an appearance in the Indiana Jones series! In a nice touch, every figure is like a caricature, with their main features emphasised. Wolverine has his talons out, the Hulk has a snarling face, and Indy is even carrying his famous bullwhip. Standing at six inches tall, the toys will fit nicely on your desk. Stock up with Junk Food

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

Cool American fashion label Junk Food have got a great understanding of retro culture. This is emphasised in their stylish t-shirts that give a cheeky nod to a wide variety of classic sci-fi, Hollywood and comic book franchises. And the three new designs now available at urbanretro.co.uk take this ethos even further. There’s also a humorous, satirical edge to one of their new Star Wars designs. The Tell Me I’m Your Daddy t-shirt gives Darth Vader a whole new personality. It features the funny caption in large bold letters contrasted against a clean stencilled design of the ever-popular anti-hero. On top of that, we’ve got two new designs which recreate the old-skool look Junk Food know and love. Luke Skywalker’s father is the star of the show once again in the Darth Vader Head Shot design, which has a distressed print for a worn-in effect. And then there’s the multi-colour visual feast of the Superman Lex Luther t-shirt. Its backdrop is cleverly offset by both skyscrapers and planets. All three designs are a fantastic addition to our Junk Food range available at urbanretro.co.uk.

Get immersed in Ultraviolence

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

Frank Kozik is renowned for his ability to create aggressive, mean-looking figures that have a sharp satiric edge. So the fact that his new Ultraviolence Qee Set is a fond reference to Clockwork Orange seems like the perfect match. And now the entire set is exclusively available at urbanretro.co.uk. Anthony Burgess’s classic 1962 novel, Clockwork Orange, focused on a hyper-real story surrounding a gang of sadistic teenagers. It also had a degree of perverse irony often found in Kozik’s work. In a literal re-interpretation, each of the five figures has been coloured orange. A cat, a dog, a bear and a monkey have all been dressed in the ‘droog’ white uniform with black braces and hats. Each figure brandishes a different weapon, including a club, a chain and a hammer. And there is also a figure in the shape of an orange too! The individual letters on the toys’ faces spell out ‘Kozik’. Limited to just 200 sets, this is a really special collector’s edition of the Qee figures, and a must-have for all fans of Clockwork Orange. Grab your Ultraviolence Qee Set while you can at urbanretro.co.uk.

Premier designs by Supremebeing

Sunday, September 21st, 2008

Since its conception in Cambridge in 1999, Supremebeing has tapped into modern British style like no other brand. Their use of bright, bold colours and chunky, clean graphics has drawn influences from art, TV and music and put them into one big melting pot. And the new range of designs now available at urbanretro.co.uk is a perfect example of this fusion. Inspirations from as 70’s funk and nu-rave come together in the new collection. The Rainbow icon t-shirt shows this perfectly, with its retro facial silhouette and rainbow colourways. And what about the funky graphics and neon pinks, yellows and blues of the Balance t-shirt. It’s so nu-rave, the Klaxons would love it! There are some nice new hoodies in the range too, including the ever-popular CMYK Toy Series and the Japanese-themed Shadow Flock design. If you want to see where modern UK fashion is at, check out the entire Supremebeing Collection at urbanretro.co.uk.
